Alexander Francis Harmer: American Painter 1856 – 1925
Alexander Francis Harmer (1856–1925) was an American painter and illustrator best known for his detailed depictions of early California life and the American Southwest. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he showed artistic talent from a young age and travelled west as a teenager. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving in California and Arizona, where he closely observed frontier life and Apache culture, producing sketches that later became important historical records. After studying at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, Harmer settled in California, where he married Felicidad Abadie in 1893. This marriage influenced his work, leading him to focus on romantic and historical scenes of Spanish-Mexican California. Harmer became known for his accurate and sympathetic portrayals of Native American and Californian subjects. His works were widely exhibited, and many are now held in museums and the Harmer Trust. He died in Santa Barbara in 1925
